Do girls these days really enjoy video games, or is it all just a marketing ploy?

Within the recent years, there has been a sudden ’surge’ of females who apparently enjoy playing video games in their spare time. I have reason to believe this is mostly a marketing ploy that many groups have a financial interest in and have gone to great lengths to perpetuate and advertise. What are everyone’s standings on this? All opinions and data are welcome and appreciated. Thank you.
im a girl. im 25, and not only do i enjoy it, but i CRAVE THEM. anything from Prince of Persia, down to MAG on ps3. i have a full time job, and i still somehow manage to play an average of 20 hours a week…i love video games. they make u think, they stimulate ur mind…LOTS of ps3 games do that.
Prince of Persia has me on edge, while MAG makes me think a lot. i love knowing my weapons, and having team/. meeting new people with the same interests. having a plan. WINNING-with my team.
another great game is Echocrome—THIS GAME IS CRAZY!
Asking if girls really enjoy video games is like asking if girls really like papayas. Some of course, it’s all a matter of taste!
I have always had a large group of gal gamer friends, personally.

yea dude, i know a bunch of chicks that play video games. even some famous chicks play video games, alot of chicks from the scene play. Hayley Williams (paramore), Victoria asher (cobra starship) and others.

A girl in my accounting class and her friends play left 4 dead 2 a lot. That said, her friends from high school were all guys, and she is a lot different from any other girl I have ever met

I am 25 and have loved video games for as long as I can remember. I had 2 sisters and video games were a huge part of our childhood. I really only like nintendo, especially some of the classics. My favorites super metroid, mega man, and rambo and of course mario. As far as playstation and x box and all those games go I enjoy watching people play but I am horrible at them. Like Halo I respawn and dies right away. Too many controls lol I can walk and aim my gun at the same time.

I don’t think it’s a marketing ploy… Well actually I do, but the reason companies are doing it because there hasn’t been an uprising girl gamers, there’s been an uprising in acceptance. Look back a few years and what separated girls and boys was very different. Today, it’s all about boys can do what girls do (sans having babies) and girls can do what boys do.
